Mt. Vernon Woods Park Grand Opening

April 18, 2026 at 6:00:00 PM

On Saturday, April 18th, SHAPE Skate Foundation was invited by the Fairfax County Park Authority to attend the grand opening of the newly renovated Mt. Vernon Woods Park.

By Maxwell Brothers

This park, located in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia has been around for decades. After years of dedicated planning and community outreach, the Park Authority was able to convert the park into a multifaceted community center with a brand new skatepark, playground, and basketball and futsal court.

We were honored to partner with Fairfax Surf Shop, the longest running skateshop in the DC area, to help kick things off at the event by offering skate lessons and hosting a community contest at the skatepark after the official ribbon cutting. Prizes for the contestants included skate decks as well as different pieces of merchandise, such as skate tools, wax, and shirts.

We were also honored to meet Franconia District Supervisor, Rodney L. Lusk, who is the first African American male to be elected to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Lusk mentioned that the Mt. Vernon community is home to a lot of underserved black & brown youth, and is open to the idea of partnering with SHAPE to do programs for the youth, especially utilizing the new skatepark.

We’d like to thank the Fairfax County Park Authority for building such an awesome park for the local community! We look forward to doing more collaborations in the future with Fairfax County and other local government organizations to further our mission of serving our community.
