On Saturday, May 2nd, SHAPE Skate Foundation attended the Link Wray Day event at Mount Rainier Skatepark in Prince George’s County, Maryland. A skateboarding community day hosted by @brokensquare on Instagram as well as Prince George’s County Parks and Recreation, the event was held to commemorate the new mural of the late rock and roll legend Link Wray painted by Jay Coleman on a building across from the skatepark.
Featuring live music, contests, and a demo, the event was a blast. Some of Link Wray’s own children were in attendance, as well as officials from Prince George’s County. SHAPE was present in both the demo and helping run the contest, and we were joined by a few other vendors who also donated prizes to the contest, like Speedlab Wheels, Fedstone Skate, Swamp Chicken Skate Wax, and Black Lotus Art.
Furthermore, we are proud to say that we had the opportunity to teach over 30 kids how to skateboard thanks to Prince George’s County’s board bus, a bus that the county owns that is home to dozens of skateboards and safety equipment to be used at events like these.
We’d like to give a big thanks to Prince George’s County Parks and Recreation for providing the boards and the safety gear to make these lessons possible, and a shoutout to DC Wheels for helping organize the event and for keeping the community rolling! We’re very grateful for all of the members of our community who come together to make awesome events like this happen.
